Only one lyric tenor on the scene today has the honeyed tone and ingratiating style to make comparisons to Pavarotti and Gigli seems serious, and it is Calleja, the man from Malta, who... is now maturing into an artist of the first rank." - New Yorker

With Rigoletto - the first work of the so-called trilogia popolare - Giuseppe Verdi achieved his breakthrough from a very popular opera composer to the undisputed leader of Italian music theatre. Its successful world premiere took place in 1851. The opera was soon performed across the world and still ranks among not only the most performed works by Verdi but the top ten works of the international opera repertoire. The Wiener Staatsoper has played this opera more than 700 times, the current production opened on 20th December 2014. Its direction marked the house debut of Pierre Audi; to him Rigoletto is equally victim and culprit: "Rigoletto is simply a human being, some things have made him a worse and others a very empathic person. A complicated character!"
