An operatic requiem? Perhaps. But above all, Verdi's Messa da Requiem is a passionate outpouring of heartfelt emotion: deeply moving, the work ranks among the most important lyrical works of the Italian national hero. The setting of the mass was created amidst the grief over the loss of the great poet and close friend Alessandro Manzoni, who, like Verdi himself, was a formative figure of the Italian Risorgimento. The Messa da Requiem demands everything—and is thus tailor-made for the orchestra and chorus of the Zurich Opera under the direction of the Italian conductor and General Music Director Gianandrea Noseda.
